Gene Chilton, Tlingit, “Raven Steals Sun”, n.d.
Gene Chilton and his brothers, Levi and Doug, are all well-known Tlingit jewelers and artists that are exceptionally skilled in the style of formline. This particular bracelet visualizes the tale of the Trickster Raven that stole the Sun for humankind, which has great significance to the Tlingit people. Chilton utilizes raw materials, silver and gold, that were not typically worked with in traditional pieces, though it displays the ability of modern Indigenous artists to incorporate new techniques to enhance historical designs.
Gene Chilton, Tlingit, “Lovebirds Whale Tail Pendant”, n.d.
Chilton employs sterling silver to engrave an Eagle and Raven pattern, called Lovebirds when together, into a whale tail form, which can be associated with specific Tlingit clans. A pendant, such as this piece, represents certain qualities evoked through the animal spirit, as well as containing protective elements. Thus, a pendant possesses spiritual and cultural connections for the Tlingit people that are both individualistic and community-oriented, as emulated through Chilton’s craft.
